v1 v2 1 = Welcome to Trac 0.11.7=1 = Privacy Dashboard = 2 2 3 Trac is a '''minimalistic''' approach to '''web-based''' management of 4 '''software projects'''. Its goal is to simplify effective tracking and handling of software issues, enhancements and overall progress. 3 The Privacy Dashboard is a Firefox add-on created by the [http://www.primelife.eu/ PrimeLife project] to help you understand what personal information is being collected by websites, and to provide you want a means to control this on a per website basis. 5 4 6 All aspects of Trac have been designed with the single goal to 7 '''help developers write great software''' while '''staying out of the way''' 8 and imposing as little as possible on a team's established process and 9 culture. 5 The Dashboard installs an icon on the browser's navigation toolbar that changes according to the current website: 10 6 11 As all Wiki pages, this page is editable, this means that you can 12 modify the contents of this page simply by using your 13 web-browser. Simply click on the "Edit this page" link at the bottom 14 of the page. WikiFormatting will give you a detailed description of 15 available Wiki formatting commands. 7 * websites that take good care of your privacy 16 8 17 "[wiki:TracAdmin trac-admin] ''yourenvdir'' initenv" created 18 a new Trac environment, containing a default set of wiki pages and some sample 19 data. This newly created environment also contains 20 [wiki:TracGuide documentation] to help you get started with your project. 9 * websites which collection some information, but lack a machine readable privacy policy 21 10 22 You can use [wiki:TracAdmin trac-admin] to configure 23 [http://trac.edgewall.org/ Trac] to better fit your project, especially in 24 regard to ''components'', ''versions'' and ''milestones''. 11 * websites that enable third parties to track you across the Web 25 12 13 The Dashboard alerts you the first time you visit a website (except for nicely behaved ones) giving you the opportunity to set your preferences. Thereafter you review these by clicking the Dashboard icon (or the Tools|Privacy Dashboard menu item) when visiting the website. 26 14 27 T racGuide is a good place to start.15 The 'Data Track' tab allows you to make a range of queries about sites. The 'Location' tab deals with your physical (geo)location. The 'Current Website' tab provides information on the current site, and allows you to review and update your preferences. Note that the Dashboard's assessment of a website provides no guarantees as to the privacy friendliness of that site. You are advised to check the site's privacy policy. 28 16 29 Enjoy! [[BR]] 30 ''The Trac Team'' 17 == Installation == 31 18 32 == Starting Points == 19 Download the dashboard.xpi file and drag the saved copy to your Firefox browser. 33 20 34 * TracGuide -- Built-in Documentation 35 * [http://trac.edgewall.org/ The Trac project] -- Trac Open Source Project 36 * [http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracFaq Trac FAQ] -- Frequently Asked Questions 37 * TracSupport -- Trac Support 21 == Sharing your findings == 38 22 39 For a complete list of local wiki pages, see TitleIndex. 23 The Privacy Dashboard allows you to opt in to sharing your findings with others. The data collected by the Dashboard as you browse gives a view about a small part of the Web. By pooling data from many users it will be possible to build up a much more detailed picture of how sites are tracking users. If you would like to help with this effort please activate the checkbox on the 'Share Findings' tab of the Dashboard dialog. The anonymized data will be periodically uploaded to the designated server (you can change which server is used). The uploaded data covers the properties of each site visited, e.g. whether it has third parties which set lasting cookies, but it doesn't include anything that could be used to identify you. Thanks for helping to make the Web a bit more transparent! 24 25 You can query the data collected so far using this web page (to be added). 26 27 == Privacy Dashbot == 28 29 The Dashboard add on can be combined with a list of sites that it will then automatically visit the home page of each site. This was first done in January 2011 for the top 1000 websites worldwide according to Google, and used to seed the online interface for querying shared findings. 30 31 == Footnote == 32 33 [http://www.primelife.eu/ PrimeLife] is a pan-european research project focusing on bringing sustainable privacy and identity management to future networks and services. The Privacy Dashboard has been developed with funding from the European Union's 7th Framework Programme. 34 35 Dave Raggett, W3C 36 Peter Wolkerstorfer, CURE 37 38 ''Copyright © 2011 W3C ® (MIT, ERCIM, Keio)''
